Indica or Sativa for Nausea

Posted by CANNASaver on Friday, 08 July 2022 in Canna Blog

When dealing with nausea, you have a variety of different options. These include pharmaceutical drugs and over-the-counter medications. However, there are also natural remedies that can be used to treat nausea.

One such remedy is medical cannabis. While there are many strains and product types out there, it’s hard to tell which will help most.

This article will discuss the benefits of using cannabis for nausea, if indica or sativa for nausea is a viable treatment as well as some strains which can be used when it comes to treating nausea.

Nausea is a problem for many health, dietary, and lifestyle reasons.

Cannabis has been shown to be effective at treating a range of conditions including nausea caused by chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients. Nausea is a problem for cancer patients, especially when they are being treated using chemotherapy. Nausea can also be a side effect of radiation therapy or surgery, among so many other things.

When you have nausea it's important to eat small meals throughout the day to keep your blood sugar steady and avoid dehydration. If you feel like eating, stay away from salty and fatty foods that could make things worse by increasing water retention in your body.

As cannabis is an anti-emetic and can help reduce nausea, the plant also comes with additional benefits such as increasing appetite, helping you sleep, and reducing stress.

Some of the best strains to relax and reduce nausea include both indica and hybrid strains. Sativa strains can help with nausea as well, but commonly are less likely to have CBD. Both THC and CBD are seen as effective treatments for nausea and vomiting.

While there are multiple pharmaceutical drugs that can be used to combat nausea, many patients want a more natural option.

While there are multiple pharmaceutical drugs that can be used to combat nausea, patients may want a more natural option. Cannabis has been shown to have numerous benefits for those suffering from nausea.

Cannabis is a natural product that has been used for millennia by humans for various purposes. Cannabis has been used to treat nausea for thousands of years; it was first used as medicine by ancient civilizations such as the Chinese and Egyptian peoples. It's potentially less harmful than many of the other treatments available today, including over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs. Some of these “Landrace” or original strains still exist today.

Sativa Landrace Strains for Nausea

  • Acapulco Gold
  • Durban Poison
  • Colombian Gold
  • Thai (also known as Chocolate Thai)

Indica Landrace Strains for Nausea

  • Afhani Kush
  • Hindu Kush
  • Pakistani Kush

Cannabis is a good option because it is an antiemetic.

Before we get into which indica or sativa for nausea is better, it’s important to recognize that cannabis is an antiemetic: a drug that helps prevent vomiting and treats nausea.

According to the University of New Mexico, cannabis is an excellent option for rapid treatment of nausea. However, the study coauthor Jacob Vigil notes “The mechanisms behind cannabis’ ability to rapidly reduce feelings of nausea are not fully clear…”

Cannabis comes in many different strains, with varying levels of THC (THC is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis).

Cannabis comes in many different strains, with varying levels of THC (THC is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis). Most people know that THC is what makes you feel “high” and “stoned” when you smoke or consume cannabis.

But there's another compound called CBD that can be used to get rid of nausea and vomiting without any psychoactive effects. This is why people who are sick with a health condition as serious as cancer, HIV/AIDS often use cannabis for relief, as well as those suffering from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Sativa and Indica Strains for Nausea

  • Suver Haze; a high-CBD, low-THC sativa strain
  • Durban Poison; a sativa strain loaded with THC
  • Jack Herer; sativa-dominant THC strain
  • Northern Lights; heavy indica known to be relaxing
  • Cannatonic; a high-CBD, low-THC strain known to treat nausea, insomnia, and more

One useful distinction between strains of cannabis is indica or sativa for nausea.

One useful distinction between strains of cannabis is sativa vs indica.

Sativa strains are more energetic, while indica strains are more relaxing. This makes sativas better for daytime use, while indicas may be preferable for nighttime use or after the workday.

In addition to this general tendency towards either a relaxing or stimulating effect, there are additional differences between the two types regarding their chemical complexity and how they interact with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies. Research is still growing as more and more states and countries legalize recreational or medical cannabis.

Indica strains generally have higher levels of CBD and lower levels of THC.

Marijuana contains more than 100 different types of cannabinoids, with many being active in the human body. However, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) get the most attention.

THC is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. It's what gets you high and makes you feel euphoric when you smoke weed, use concentrates, or eat edibles.

However, not all cannabinoids are psychoactive; some have no effect on your mind at all!

CBD is one such cannabinoid that has no psychoactive properties, meaning it won't get you high like THC does. However, this non-psychoactive cannabinoid can still provide many benefits to users who want relief from nausea or pain without feeling intoxicated by their medicine!

High CBD Strains

  • Harlequin
  • Harle-Tsu; a high CBD cross between Harlequin and Sour Tsunami
  • Cannatonic
  • Sour Tsunami

Additionally, indica strains generally have a mellowing effect on the consumer, making them more suitable for nighttime use.

This can be especially helpful to those who suffer from nausea as they're trying to fall asleep. Sativa strains are known to have an energizing effect on consumers, which can make them more suitable for daytime use but less so at night.

Author Option: Indica strains are better for treatment of nausea than sativa strains.

If you’re suffering from nausea and trying to decide on a indica or sativa, an indica strain might be the way to go. The reasons for this are two-fold:

  1. Indica strains are more likely to have high CBD content. THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, but they work in different ways. THC is well known for producing a psychoactive effect in users while CBD has been shown to provide anti-anxiety and anti-inflammatory benefits without psychoactive effects. Because of these properties, sativa strains tend to have higher THC content than indicas (or at least less CBD). This makes them more stimulating and better suited for daytime use; however, it can make them less helpful with treating symptoms such as nausea which often appear at night or during times when you want to lay down and rest.
  2. Indica strains also tend to be more sedating than sativas because they contain higher levels of another cannabinoid called myrcene—a terpene found in many plants, including hops, that can help promote sleepiness while reducing anxiety and inflammation.

About Cannasaver

Back in 2009, we identified what was missing from cannabis media: a simple merging of traditional retail with the forces that once drove underground purchases for the decades before legalization: product deals and quality for a good price.

What you see today is the end product of that research, CANNAPAGES Directory & Digest, which first launched on the streets of Denver in January, 2014. Since then, we’ve worked to spread the joy of Cannasaver to recreational markets-–and we still have many new territories to explore.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Prescription

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 20 September 2021 in

Has this ever happened to you?

One day you’re out for a nice evening stroll when out of nowhere a wild gang of highly trained, rogue opossum ninjas begin to follow you.

They scamper through gutters and people’s yards, hiding in the shadows behind garbage cans stopping but for a brief snack and sip of water only to catch up to you as quickly as they had stopped to break from their pursuit.

You begin to worry a bit and tell yourself it's only the joint that your buddy hooked you up with and it must be some potent ganja, but then you look back again and the opossum gang is still there and getting closer...

So, you begin to run, and in doing so, twist your ankle and fall down.

Then, you look back up and it turns out the opossums weren’t actually trying to catch you but were just neighborhood cats and there was a fish market halfway up the block ahead of you and they knew it was the time that all the excess fish got put in the alley for them to feast on.

But now you’ve got a sprained ankle and feel silly about the whole situation.

Fear not!

Now that you have injured yourself and need to go see a doctor for the pain in your foot, you are well on your way to getting a medical marijuana card.

This situation hasn’t happened to us, but if it did to you, then we are sorry for your pain and possible PTSD from the whole ordeal and we have some good news!

You are more than likely qualified to get your medical marijuana card!!

Benefits of Getting a Medical Marijuana Prescription

Many states are now fully legal both medically and recreationally, however some states still are only medically legal.

For some, having a medical card and being able to legally carry and consume cannabis as the medicine it is, can be the difference between living a happy, productive, pain-medicated life through cannabis and getting a potentially dangerous pain medication prescription

We here at Cannasaver think everyone should have safe access to medicine that fits their life and works with their body and mind.

In this blog, we’ll give you some tips on how to get a medical card in your state and some helpful tips to get you through the process it takes to get one.

If you are thinking about getting your card, we have found that having your medical card can be the difference between a large ticket or worse and being let go by an officer of the law if you are ever in a sticky situation with cannabis.  No pun intended.

There have been times for us that we have been pulled over in a state where cannabis is not recreationally legal but is medical, had our medical card, and been let go with our medicine.

Now, this isn’t always the case and it won’t get you out of a Driving While Under the Influence ticket if the officer deems you are intoxicated (and we strongly discourage you from driving under the influence), but it definitely doesn’t hurt to have if you are ever in any situation.

Conditions for Getting Medical Marijuana Prescription

The first step is acquiring proof that you have a condition that can be treated through medical cannabis.

Luckily, the list is pretty long.

Alzheimer's disease

Appetite loss

Cancer

Crohn's disease

Diseases affecting the immune system like HIV/AIDS or Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Eating disorders such as anorexia

Epilepsy

Glaucoma

Mental health conditions like schizophrenia and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Multiple sclerosis

Muscle spasms

Nausea

Pain

Seizures

Wasting syndrome (cachexia)

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Prescription

Once you have documented proof that you have one or more of these conditions, it’s time to do a Google search of cannabis doctors in your state.  There will probably be a long list of doctors so we recommend picking one near to you.

Oftentimes, these doctors will do events where they travel around the state and see many patients in one day.  We have seen a decrease in the number of doctors in some states where cannabis has become recreationally legal.

After you’ve seen your doctor and have the signed form for the state indicating you are prescribed medical marijuana, you will need to mail it into the licensing office along with your other supporting documents so that they may issue you a medical card.

Why Should I Get My Medical Card Even If It’s Legal In My State?

In many states, there are still benefits to having your medical marijuana card.

For example, in Colorado having your card allows you to buy stronger cannabis products at lower prices

You are allowed to carry more cannabis with you at one time.

You are allowed to grow more plants to produce your medicine.

There isn’t much of a downside to getting your card but only a larger upside.

Puerto Rico’s New Medical Marijuana Laws

Puerto Rico has legalized medical marijuana--again! On July 9th, Puerto Rico’s Governor Ricardo Nevares signed off on a comprehensive medical marijuana bill that will open the way for many more medical marijuana dispensaries to operate in this small U.S. territory. The previous governor had signed a similar law that allowed for a few marijuana dispensaries in Puerto Rico to open on a sort of test basis. The new law sets up a complete system for how new stores can open, and how tax revenues will be spent.

It’s those tax revenues that Puerto Rico is banking on. With seventy-four billion dollars of debt, taxes from the medical marijuana industry offer a glimmer of hope for the impoverished island. With states like Colorado raking in well over a billion dollars a year in marijuana tax revenues, Puerto Rico’s hope is not too far-fetched. The new industry is expected to create nearly 50,000 new jobs, and with 12.3% of Puerto Rico’s residents currently unemployed, those new jobs could help a lot. Money generated from the medical marijuana industry will also be used to improve local hospitals and schools, with 10% of tax revenues going to a trauma hospital, and 50% of the money collected from fines going to the University of Puerto Rico.

Cannabis business owners and entrepreneurs are expected to take interest in Puerto Rico, not only to take advantage of a new market, but to also take advantage of the territory’s tax laws. In the U.S., marijuana businesses are not allowed to claim any expenses on their taxes, whether it’s office supplies, rent, insurance, or whatever other legitimate business expenses there might be. In Puerto Rico, however, no such regulation exists, so marijuana businesses will be able to deduct expenses from their taxes just like any other business. It might seem like a drop in the bucket, but all those extra taxes add up to big bucks.

So who exactly can buy weed in Puerto Rico now? Medical marijuana use is approved for many illnesses and ailments including anxiety, arthritis, cancer, HIV, multiple sclerosis, anorexia, Crohn’s disease, fibromyalgia, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, migraines, severe pain, nausea, and many other conditions. Recreational marijuana is still illegal there, unfortunately, so don’t start packing your bags just yet.

Aren’t you glad you live in Colorado? While Puerto Rico is just getting its feet wet with medical marijuana, we’re all sitting back browsing through both medical and recreational marijuana coupons from Cannasaver to save money on our weed! Some folks just have it lucky, I suppose!
