When you unbox the Source Turbo from Extract Craft, it's hard not to feel intimidated by how complicated it looks to make your own concentrates. For me, in all honesty, I gave up the blonde hair. I dyed mine blue-black just to make sure I could easily operate this unit. The blonde needed to go away so that a mad scientist could take her place.

In reality such a drastic makeover wasn't necessary to operate this baby. It's actually a very simple process, the machine itself. What you need most is patience and the ability to follow instructions (for all the steps!) before and after using the Source.

At the time of this writing, I have only made shatter and pull n' snap. I have not tried Jar Tech yet to make EHO (Ethanol Hash Oil) or edibles. This is the part that still intimidates me just a hair.

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Reclaims ethanol
  • Makes smokables and edibles
  • Price

Cons:

  • Process requires patience
  • Ethanol required isn't legal in all states (check your local laws)
  • Ethanol is expensive
  • Loud

In A Nutshell:

Patience is something this Squirrel lacks almost completely. At the age of 10 I unwrapped all my Christmas presents and rewrapped them. Nobody was the wiser until I confessed many years after. Now nobody wraps my presents. The best I can hope for in the way of wrapping is the shipping box.

While waiting for your Source Turbo to arrive you have to watch and read all the documentation, maybe several times. Take lots of notes and make a "Flight check list" for all the steps you will need to take in prep, extraction and post processing of oil.

Here are a few helpful links:

All the steps might seem intimidating and they are, until you do it the first time. Then you are wondering why this all seemed so complicated in the beginning. In my case it's probably because I barely passed Chemistry in high school, probably due to the fact I was smoking weed. So it's a bit ironic that weed is to blame in rekindling my interest in the subject I failed to excel in so many moons ago.

After my 3rd batch of making the THC oil with my Source I don't need my check list anymore. Everything is pretty simple. The only tricky part that I am still trying to master is when to actually end my process. Getting that sweet spot for the oil takes time and experience to get it right.

If you have the right friends perhaps you can get trim or shake to experiment with until you get the hang of making your shatter. The only downfall with using trim verses bud is that it tends to hold onto more of the ethanol during the wash portion. At least that was my experience. For my second attempt at washing trim I was able to get more ethanol out by letting the mason jar sit longer upside down in the measuring cup, for almost an additional 1 1/4 cups.

For this review I am going to focus more on the machine use verses the whole process. A detailed account of the steps, from prewash to finish with journal of my first few sessions visit my personal reviews site, Racky's Reviews

Extract Craft was out of their buchner filter and flask so I had to order on Amazon. Personally, this is a must have as it really speeds up the process with the Source's vacuum assist and gets your wash clean. Some people use mason jars with coffee filters to do their filtering with patience and success too.

The hose that came with my Amazon flask was horrible. I needed to be a descendant of Kâli to use the vacuum assist on the Source with this rigid short tubing. I couldn't find anything local that worked either. So the first two washes I relied on gravity to filter my "tincture".

After much frustration at gravity intentionally deciding to move much slower under my watchful impatient gaze, I started plotting ideas to make my own vacuum hose. For once being on oxygen had it's perks. With my "no crush" green tubing, a swivel O2 male connector and racers tape *aka duct tape* I made an ugly but amazingly efficient vacuum hose. What took hours with gravity now only took a fraction of the time. The vacuum assist on the Source is easy to use and works great.

Now I was ready to use the Source. First set altitude, which is super easy. Hold the green button for 10 full seconds. Click out your elevation at 1 click per 1000FT. If at 300FT round up to 1k. Yes, their rounding rules are weird.

The written instructions are slightly different from the video. I think someone may have been smoking some weed when they wrote them out. Per video you hold for 4 full seconds to start turbo mode. Unit will give 2 slow flashes. To stop press button once. Unit will give you 3 *not 2* quick flashes.

Use a timer because the Source does not fully shut off at the end of the 120 min cycle. The fan still runs so you might not realize your session ended. On turbo mode, wash filled to Fill Line, it took about 2 hrs and 45 min to get my oil to the consistency I wanted. The last 30 minutes watch carefully, checking every 5-10 minutes.

Their app is another great way to monitor your time too. This app has to be the most fool proof software I have ever used. It automatically connected to my Source without me having to push anything on the unit.

This wonderful little machine is loud. I think I would hesitate to use this in an apartment. Especially if female. When the pump kicks on, it's pretty loud and who knows what dirty images that might conjure in your neighbors heads. They might get the wrong idea on why you are so happy all the time! Oh my!

However, if you like distillate and other concentrates you NEED this unit. What better way to get the flower and flavors in the concentrates you love than make your own? Plus you know what all is in your concentrates. You can even add additional terps with companies like TrueTerpenes line of products. Custom blended and super yummy.

The unit really is "So Easy A Squirrel Can Do It." It consists of one button and one screw "knob," not much you can screw up there. The prep and post process are a little more complicated but if you visit the links above and familiarize yourself with all the steps, it really isn't that hard. Make sure to make use of their FaceBook Group too. There is a huge wealth of knowledge there with very friendly and helpful users.

If you grow your own flower and have the money I would highly suggest getting the ETOH Pro, although there is something very therapeutic about doing the smaller batches in the Source. It helps to get my fluffy biscuit up and moving about.

This unit due to it's simple, quality design and ease of use earns it a Wacky Racky Seal of Approval.

What is a Whole Plant Ounce?

What is a Whole Plant Ounce? Definition, deals, and more

When I was looking on CannaSaver the other day for ounce deals near me, I came across a term that I’ve been seeing more and more often in regards to weed: whole plant ounce. What exactly is a whole plant ounce, you may wonder? If you’re unsure about the definition of whole plant ounce, you’re not alone. It’s really quite simple, though. Here is all you need to know to get your questions answered about whole plant ounces, from whole plant ounce definition to where to buy a whole plant ounce in Denver, and what makes a whole plant ounce different than a “regular” ounce.

What is the Definition of Whole Plant Ounce?

You may have heard the term “whole plant” used in reference to concentrates. When “whole plant” is used in this way, it means that the concentrates, be it wax, shatter, or oils, was produced using “live” plants that have been frozen while still fresh--thus producing an extract that includes all the compounds of the marijuana plant, as some of those compounds can get lost in the process with other extraction techniques. However, when you hear the term “whole plant ounce,” it means something different. The definition of whole plant ounce is an ounce that has come from one single marijuana plant. Most of the time when weed is harvested at grow houses, all the buds from all the plants of a particular strain are mixed together. With a whole plant ounce, the buds from each individual plant are packaged separately. When you buy a whole plant ounce, you know that every single bud in that ounce came off the very same plant. This offers some distinct benefits for the savvy stoner who enjoys a consistent level of high from their buds.

How is a Whole Plant Ounce better or Different Than a “Regular” Ounce?

While a whole plant ounce is definitely different in that it comes from a single plant instead of being comprised of buds from who knows how many plants, it may or may not be “better” than that “regular” ounce you get. A whole plant ounce from a weak or mediocre strain is not going to be as good as a “regular” ounce from a super-potent strain. But--if you were to compare a “regular” ounce of the kickass bud with a whole plant ounce of that same bud, the whole plant ounce will be the winner. This is because with a whole plant ounce, the quality of the buds will be consistent throughout the entire ounce. Variations in marijuana potency occur not only from strain to strain, but from individual plant to individual plant. With a whole plant ounce, from the first bud you smoke till the last, what you experience is consistent and predictable. With a regular ounce, you might get that odd “dud” bowl that doesn’t seem to do much of anything. A whole plant ounce ensures that every bowl you smoke from that ounce will be pretty much identical in flavor and potency. As another benefit, some people feel that with a whole plant ounce, you get more of a complete picture of the “energies” of the marijuana plant. Sort of like whole bean coffee that’s freshly ground as opposed to pre-ground, pre-packaged stuff. It’s simply better all around.

Where to Buy a Whole Plant Ounce Deal in Denver

If you’re looking to buy a whole plant ounce in Denver, the best place to go is RiverRock. This Denver dispensary has two locations, so whether you want an ounce deal in north Denver or an ounce deal in south Denver, there is always a RiverRock nearby, which means there is always an ounce deal near me whenever I need one. RiverRock is one of only a few dispensaries in Denver that advertises whole plant ounces, and what’s more, they usually have amazing deals on these whole plant ounces. Right now with the RiverRock coupon on CannaSaver, a whole plant ounce is only $85 recreational, or $75 for medical members. This price is good at their north Denver dispensary as well as their south Denver dispensary.

Why Concentrates Are Great For Medicinal Purposes?

Marijuana concentrates are being used to treat a variety of complaints including anxiety, pain, and insomnia. Many medical marijuana patients find that dabbing concentrates like wax or shatter is the fastest way to gain relief from their symptoms. While the process of packing bowl after bowl in the quest to achieve an adequate high can become tedious and time-consuming, with a quick hit or two off the dab rig, you’re good to go. That quick relief comes with a price, though, and concentrates can seem a bit expensive if you’re used to buying cheap weed in Denver and getting $100 ounce deals. Luckily, there are plenty of great concentrates deals, too, if you know where to look. In fact, some of the best bargains to be found at Denver dispensaries are medical concentrates deals. Check out these latest deals that prove cheap wax and shatter in Denver is not just a myth.

Medical Concentrates Ounce deals

The Joint by Cannabis, a dispensary in Denver Highlands,  has an awesome medical concentrates deal going on right now if you’re in the position to stock up. For $350, you can get an ounce of Craft or Mahatma wax or shatter, which is about the best concentrates ounce deal Denver shoppers can hope for. Another place you can get a good concentrates ounce deal is at the southwest Denver dispensary Colorado Cannabis Connection, where medical customers receive 20% off storewide with the CannaSaver dispensary deals coupon. If you’re looking for a Denver dispensary on Kipling, Colorado Cannabis Connection is definitely worthy of a visit.

More Denver Medical Wax and Shatter Deals

This Savvy Stoner doesn’t always have the cash on hand to take advantage of a concentrate ounce deal, but I still manage to get deep discounts on cheap wax and cheap shatter even if I’m only getting a gram or two. One dispensary near Federal blvd. in Denver is High Street Growers. There, you can score a medical concentrates deal on a gram of Denver Dab Company wax or shatter for only $18, tax included. They have some of the best concentrates deals on Federal that you’re going to find. Another good one to check out is Herbal Remedies. If you haven’t yet been to Herbal Remedies, this Alameda ave. dispensary in Denver has a special discount for first-time patients, offering a gram of house wax or shatter for just $15. That’s a very low price for medical concentrates, so if you haven’t yet visited this dispensary near Lakewood, take advantage.

Vape deals, distillate deals, and other discount concentrates

Another way to score good medical deals on concentrates in Denver is to try out some of the other products like vapes and distillates. If you’re looking for deals on distillate or other vaping products, CannaSaver is the easiest way to find cheap vape pens, cheap vape cartridges, cheap distillate syringes, cheap vape pen batteries, and more from Denver dispensaries. Golden Meds Leetsdale dispensary has Sperex ½ gram distillate syringes on sale for just $25, and a 500mg Flo distillate cartridge is just $40. At Ballpark Hollistic Dispensary in downtown Denver, you can get an Evolabs deal on the Evolabs Chroma cartridge for 20% off. At RiverRock South, they have an O.Pen cartridges deal for 30% off. If you want a deal on OpenVape cartridges, head to La Conte’s Clone bar North location where you can get them for 30% off. La Conte’s Clone Bar North has some of the best dispensary deals Denver north has to offer. They also have a centrally located dispensary in downtown Denver.

Dab a little, save a lot

While concentrates can seem expensive upfront, a little goes an extremely long way, so you really do get your money’s worth. Especially if you take advantage of the recreational or medical concentrates deals Denver dispensaries are offering on CannaSaver, you’re really getting a bargain. If an ounce of flower ordinarily lasts you a week, with a little wax or shatter added on as a bowl topper, that same ounce will last you two weeks, so you’re really saving money in the long run. That’s how the Savvy Stoner justifies it, anyway! Now, to the dispensary!

Difference Between Nug Run and Trim Run Concentrates

THC based concentrates are prepared in many different ways. If you're exploring the difference, here's a good place to start.  After careful research, it appears there are different names for different types of concentrates. There's also that 'slangy' greyish area of terminology that tends to allow certain words the freedom to encompass different meanings for different people.

For instance, one online source has listed a NUG run as: Nectar — stating the term is a little vague, but stating the most common usage is referring to hash oil made from all nugs rather than trim. We'll take a look at Nectar in a moment but first let's take a look at another source who states; Hash oil or water hash as it may be called is made entirely from cannabis flowers rather than trim material. Since the flowers are the most trichome and terpene-rich part of the cannabis plant, these extracts are known for yielding quite a bit more than trim as well as providing a cleaner flavor.

With that summation from various sources, we then look at what's being said about trim run concentrates, noting a site saying; A Trim run is when concentrates are made from trim rather than buds. The site further states that Trim runs are generally thought to be a step below nug runs in terms of yield, potency and flavor. A variety of concentrate makers report similar results using either type of starting material.

Now let's turn to that oh so precious Nectar. First and foremost, let's understand the greater picture of 'Nectar' and the richness it is.  According to Greek Mythology, Nectar was called the divine drink that the Olympian gods had. It had the magical property to confer immortality on any mortal who had the luck to drink it. It was closely related to ambrosia, which was considered the food of the gods, although sometimes it was also thought to be a drink.

Studying further I stumbled onto an old blog with some interesting conversations posted one of which stated; "there are a lot of scientists/historians who believe the mythical drink "ambrosia" the nectar of the gods was created by having honey bee hives next to cannabis/hemp fields. The honey that is produced from that area then contains thc, that the ancient greeks would mix into a wine with euphoric like feelings."

So by connecting a few dots, we have a good idea of the origins of Nectar. Wiki says Nectar is a sugar-rich liquid produced by plants in glands called nectaries, either within the flowers with which it attracts pollinating animals, or by extrafloral nectaries, which provide a nutrient source to animal mutualists, which in turn provide antiherbivore protection.

Of course the conversation about bees, weed and honey got me to thinking and of course so did others, but to my astonishment, there's a fellow from france who calls himself Nicholas Trainer-bees who is becoming quite a little legend amongst both beekeepers and cannabis enthusiasts. He claims he has trained his bees to make honey from weed!  He states, “I have trained bees to do several things, such as collect sugar from fruits, instead of using flowers,” Nicholas said. “The aim arose for me to get the bees to obtain this resin.”

By using what he calls “a training technique whereby the bees collect the resin and use it in the beehive,” Nicholas and his bees have created the world’s first batch of “cannahoney.”

Well Howdy Doody! Do you think they'll package it in cans?

Let's have some tea....pass the honey please.

MrD.

Should I Try Marijuana Concentrates?

Posted by CANNASaver on Monday, 31 October 2016 in Canna Blog

Is It Time for Concentrates?

Concentrates are a far more prevalent product in the current marijuana industry than they ever have been, but for new customers and tourists the idea can be a little daunting and much of the time not something that they are actually looking for. I have seen tourists drop hundreds of dollars on concentrates and the necessary apparatuses to consume them, just for a few days worth of their trip, when really they could have gotten more than enough regular marijuana to meet whatever chemical demands their body may have had.

While concentrates are understandably a more purified form of what we are all smoking anyway, they can bring with them some disconcerting effects. There is of course the stigma that if you’ve not done concentrates before, your first time dabbing can be a little ridiculous compared to smoking regular flower. The first time I dabbed was right when I first moved to Denver, and I was blisteringly high for almost three hours. But the first thing I noticed was after having dabbed, regular flower did not hit me the same way for a few days. Concentrates can wreak havoc on your tolerance, and if you get too used to doing concentrates you can find yourself not even getting anywhere smoking regular weed. This is one of the main reasons I don’t do concentrates, because I enjoy actual smoking too much to let it get ruined by that level of tolerance. Even things like disposable vape pens can do a number on your resistance to THC, though generally only the higher end pure hash cartridges, as some of the ones cut with polyethylene glycol come in only slightly above smoking normally.

But for some people, particularly those who genuinely use it for medical benefits and need an incredibly strong high as fast as they can get it, and after building up a tolerance to regular marijuana it can be the next step for people not interested in edibles or tinctures. It can be pretty depressing for medical patients to find that their tolerance has risen to the point that an intake method doesn’t work anymore, and having this next step option is a nice trade off, though it can get considerably more expensive if you do it very regularly. That being said, because of the new regulation on concentrates only allowed to be sold as attributing to 3.5 grams of your allowed buying quantity, many dispensaries are running sales on concentrates, since they used to be able to sell considerably more at a time under previous regulations.

Some new products have cropped up as well, making ultra purified concentrates that then have additional terpenes added back in for an even more enhanced effect. These are very clean compared to regular flower as with smoking weed or tobacco there is a good amount of plant matter you are dealing with in the process of trying to get your chemicals. Terpenes can sometimes get lost or lessened in the case of some concentrate production, which can take away from the complexity of the high, but these days extractors have gotten much more skilled than when this all was starting. For people with greater levels of health concerns as far as what they put into their body can find concentrates to be the thing they might be looking for, though intake methods can have a decent presence in this decision as well.

This also comes into play when selling to people in a dispensary, as sometimes the people that want concentrates are only going to be in town for a few days and aren’t going to want to spend a whole bunch on a reliable setup, making for a growth in the available vaporizer pens, varying in price and reliability from 13$ disposable pens to several hundred dollar gold plated options. I have used a few of the disposables and had a roughly $60 pen that worked fairly well, but it is definitely a learning process as far as how much each pen can functionally use and timing for good hits.

Ultimately concentrates are for those with an already established tolerance, or an option every once in a while to have slightly too good of a time. They are definitely a big choice to make if you plan on switching to them regularly, though the industry is constantly working to make them more accessible so who knows maybe that’ll be the only way we smoke in a year or two. Just be wary, they can often be more than anyone regularly needs.

Best Concentrates in Colorado

Posted by CANNASaver on Wednesday, 27 January 2021 in Canna Blog

Sometimes flower just doesn’t cut it. Maybe you’ve built up a tolerance, or maybe you’re just looking for a better high. Good thing for concentrates. These are the best concentrates in Denver.

What are Concentrates?

Whether you're a first-time or experienced dabber, you might still be wondering exactly what concentrates are. Deciding what concentrate to choose and knowing how to use it properly takes a little background knowledge.

Concentrates are where you isolate the most desirable parts of the cannabis plant through a process of heat and extraction. Basically, concentrates are the best part of marijuana in a convenient package. Scientifically, it’s a bit more complicated. Suffice it to say concentrates will get you higher than the average flower.

Types of Concentrates

Concentrates come in a variety of forms:

·         Live Resin

·         Shatter

·         Wax

·         Budder

·         Crystalline (Diamonds)

Though there are many different types of concentrates, they are essentially all the same product—extracted, compounded marijuana oils. They are named differently based on the consistency, density, and texture of the end product, as well as differences in how the concentrates are prepared.

How are Concentrates Used?

Some concentrates can be used topically or taken orally, while others are used in a vaporizer commonly known as a vape pen. Dabbing is also popular. This is the process of heating up a small amount of concentrate such as live resin with a device called a dab rig, and inhaling the vapors.

Think heating up a drop of hash on a penknife and breathing in the smoke—same basic concept, only now you can buy an actual factory-made contraption for this. Concentrates can also be cooked into edibles, or you can go the old-fashioned route and top off a bowl of ordinary flower to give it an extra kick.

Live Resin

Live resin is simply cannabis oil that has been extracted from fresh flowers that have been freeze-dried rather than air-dried and cured the typical way. This produces a different flavor in the resin, imparting a more aromatic and floral bouquet. Live resin is usually somewhat gooey in consistency and typically has a higher terpene content.

Shatter

Shatter is heat extracted or chemically extracted cannabis oil that has hardened into a glasslike substance that's usually amber colored and mostly transparent. When it's heated, it becomes a viscous liquid similar to thickened honey. Shatter can be relatively inexpensive, with deals as low as 15 dollars a gram.

Wax

Wax refers to concentrated marijuana oil that has been extracted--often with butane or other chemicals—to produce a thick, oily, and wax-like substance that can be smoked or vaporized. Unlike shatter which is see-through and hard, wax is soft and opaque.

Budder

Like the other concentrates, budder is extracted from flower to make a more potent product. Unlike wax or shatter, budder has the consistency of, well, butter. It’s a type of hash oil that can be up to 70 percent THC.

Crystalline

Also known as dust or diamonds, crystalline is concentrated THCA that comes in a solid form. Think kief. Crystalline often has little flavor because of the relatively low amount of terpenes but makes up for that lack of potency.

The Best of the Best Concentrates

Colorado is home to some of the best, award-winning concentrate companies in America. Recreational weed use has been legal in Colorado since 2012, allowing local businesses to branch out and perfect their extraction techniques. The use of concentrates by stoners continues to grow as time goes by.

Here are some extraction experts that make some of the best concentrates you can find in Colorado:

·         Green Dot Labs, based in Boulder, makes some of the best live resin in Colorado. Deals on their live resin can be found here.

·         Sano Gardens, based in Commerce City, specializes in cannabis extraction. Their live resin is popular among Coloradoans.

·         710 Labs makes some of the best concentrates for both Colorado and California.

·         VIOLA is a marijuana company started by former NBA player Al Harrington. Their concentrates can be found in dispensaries across Colorado.

·         Nomad Extracts make their concentrates from Colorado-grown cannabis. They’ve won awards for both their wax and shatter, among others. You can find their platinum wax for 30 dollars a gram at dispensaries in the Denver-metro area.

·         Lazercat Cannabis are Colorado-based growers and extractors. Their live rosin is a premium concentrate.

·         Kush Masters is an extraction company “nested in a log cabin next to Boulder’s Flatiron mountains.” You can get eight grams of their wax for 120 dollars in Denver.

Where to Find Concentrates in Colorado

Most local dispensaries will have plenty of choices when it comes to concentrates. A budtender is always willing to help or answer any questions one might have. We’ve put together a list of some Colorado dispensaries that have great deals on concentrates:

·         The Lodge Cannabis has locations on Federal Blvd and High Street. There’s currently a deal for two grams of Green Dot live resin for 90 dollars or four grams of wax for 70 dollars.

·         Pure Marijuana Dispensary has five locations across the Denver-metro area. You can find deals on cartridges, wax, and shatter (among many others) at any location.

·         The Stone Dispensary, located in Denver, has a wide variety of concentrate deals for the frugal stoner. The previously-mentioned Kush Masters live resin is 24 dollars OTD per gram. There’s also a deal on all brands of wax or shatter.

·         Mary Jane’s House is located on Quentin Street just a little outside of Denver. They have deals on wax right now for just 27 dollars for two grams.

Which Concentrate is Right for Me?

The first time trying concentrates can be confusing. There are a ton of choices, but only you are going to know which is best for you. Trial and error, so to speak. No shame in trying them all.
